Topic 1.4 Democracy- rights in context
This builds on work we have done on Pressure Groups in the UK and the previous lesson which examined the rights legislation development in UK (students made a timeline from the textbook of the major legislation passed and court cases.
This lesson includes:
A colour code summary sheet examining how rights have been challenged and upheld by: Pressure Groups, think tanks, Parliament and the Judiciary.
A report by Amnesty International into the state of rights in the UK in 2022

Edexcel Politics ALevel but can be used for AQA or US Civics lessons
Lesson 1 Introduction to USA Politics to start Year 13 course in Comparative Politics.
1 hour lesson which will cover all the basics of US Politics- Part of my 2 lesson intro to USA- Part 2 is US Historical context.
Designed for Edexcel spec but can be adapted for AQA.
Could also be used for other areas e.g. context for English Literature, Social Studies, Sociology etc.

I have created some topic checklists for each topic from the spec with key bullet points for students to traffic light their confidence including key words at the bottom.
For US Presidency and Supreme Court/ Civil Rights I have also included key case studies as I know students struggle with these.
Included all key legislative achievements for Presidents from Clinton up to Biden (correct as of June 2023)
Also includes useful tables e.g. how many exec orders each POTUS has, vetoes used, signing statements used etc.
Included all key Court Cases which created policy for SCOTUS and key cases relating to the bill of rights.
For Democracy, I have included case studies of interest groups needed for the exam and also a debate on whether interest groups provide evidence of pluralism or elitism.

Complete lesson on Representative Democracy and its Features in the UK including some analysis and evaluation of how effective it is.

This lesson is an investigation lesson into potential reforms of the UK Democratic system to boost participation and engagement, make the government more legitimate and accountable and improve representation.
Included: Complete lesson designed to take 2 hours plus homework. Full powerpoint, all resources for investigation and writing up analysis and evaluation.

Edexcel Politics ALevel but can be used for AQA
This is a double (2 hour) lesson on the Principles and Features of the Constitution. Includes all up to date case studies and examples from the updated Bennett book (2021).
Very comprehensive, suitable for new teacher with no knowledge- all informationn and examples included in worksheets and slides.
Students to work independently learning about the principles then do some class discussion and evaluation before completing their own “report cards” for the Principles to grade them and justify the grades they have given.
How effectively does Congress fulfil its role of Representation in the USA?
-Includes up to date examples and video links of AOC, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Marco Rubio etc.
Very detailed- explains concepts of gerrymandering and pork barrel politics, incumbency advantage, caucuses etc.
Lesson lasts around 2hours as I teach in doubles but can be broken down into smaller chunks.

Edexcel ALevel Politics Component 3 USA Politics Comparative
Topic 4 Supreme Court and Civil Rights
This is my Introduction lesson to the Court and key terms e.g. Stare Decisis, Loose/ Strict Constructivism and Originalism.
Includes a key profile of the current court for a research homework and how they ruled on key cases e.g. Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Board of Health and New York state rifle assoc. v Bruen which cover key aspects of the divisive issues in the USA today e.g. abortion rights, gun control, voting rights, immigration and campaign finance.
All the SCOTUS cases I cover are useful case studies for other topics due to the synoptic nature of the ALevel course, this helps students to join the dots.

Edexcel Politics ALevel
Component 3 USA Comparative Politics
This is lesson 2 in my Unit on the Supreme Court and examines the nature of the nomination process, factors which influence the President and strengths and weaknesses of the process. Examines how independent the SCOTUS is and arguments for and against.
Includes case studies on nominations of Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson for students to research, key examples from the past 75 years, video links to explainers/ examples and an essay plan on the question:
Evaluate the view that the nomination process for the Supreme Court is fit for purpose. The essay plan is part completed for students, they have to use their knowledge from the past few lessons to complete it.

Edexcel Government and Politics Component 1 Topic 2 Parties
This is my second knowledge organiser for Edexcel Govt and Politics Component 1 Topic 2 Political Parties.

This lesson is for the Component 1 teaching of Democracy. It examines the development of suffrage in the UK and milestones which led to this and examines more recent debates about the growth of suffrage e.g. Votes for 16 and the voting rights for prisoners.
If you can get hold of a copy of Blackadder III Dish and Dishonesty it is well worth it- so funny for the state of Democracy in the 19th Century but it is not essential for this lesson. Obviously I cannot share this for copyright reasons.

This is my lesson 5 on Congress (Edexcel) and examines the changing role and powers of Congress over time in the USA.
Starter quiz and debate colour coding sheet on the debate on whether Congress is more of a WATCHDOG or LAPDOG in oversight of executive branch.
Examines changing role/ powers with such context as the era of the 13th Amendment, 1980s Party Polarisation and Trump with the deep factional divides within the GOP.

Edexcel Politicsc ALevel Paper 1 Feedback
Note: This mock exam feedback and modelling is for the 2023 Paper but for Questions 1a/b and 2a/b only as I don’t teach Ideologies.
This feedback powerpoint has common mistakes and key content for the exam questions 1a/b and 2a/b including a full modelled paragraph using the PEELE structure with clear evaluation and mini judgments.
Also includes a purple pen response sheet with the modelled paragraphs to highlight and then space to write their own / example conclusions.
